ServiceRepair Die Handling Procedures RR ROTARY A/S maintains an extensive rotary die repair facility. When tools are worn, it is recommended that they are sent back to RR ROTARY for repair. Repairs are handled on a first-come, first-served basis; repair costs are charged on a time and material basis. | |
The repair die handling procedure is as follows: 1. Upon arrival at RR Rotary’s factory, crate and die are checked for damage due to transportation. 2. Die is unpacked, cleaned and placed under a microscope whereafter all cutting blades are examined for possible damage which will require welding before OD grinding. The innerrings are checked and changed, if needed. Note: In winter, dies could be very cold at arrival due to transportation and it is typically necessary to wait one day, before repair procedures can begin. 3. RR Rotary order No. is assigned and a work sheet is filled in with the following information: Incoming date. RR Rotary order No. Customer order No. and order specifications. OD diameter. Welding order, if needed. Comments, if needed. Initials from all operators Customer information (“log sheets”) follows the die for evaluating amount of stress and cracks which might be hidden in the die.
This information is very useful when deciding how much to take off the diameter when OD grinding. 4. If welding is needed, damaged material is ground away, whereafter the die is being welded. Welding of a hardened die is possible due to a special welding technique. Welding is carried out by means of a hardened electrode which ensures maintenance of die hardness.
5. Before grinding, the die is checked for runout in the OD grinder. If runout of 0.005 mm or more is detected, centres will be ground on a special centre grinding machine. When a runout less than 0.005 is obtained, the die is OD ground. Typically, 0.1 to 0.15 mm is taken off the die diameter. The reduction in diameter is determined by examining the blade under a microscope placed directly on the OD grinder. After finished grinding, the new diameter will be noted on the work sheet. 6. When sharpening, RR Rotary is using handsharpening only. This ensures that each and every mm cutting blade is carefully checked under microscope by trained and experienced eyes while sharpening. 7. After sharpening, the die is tested by cutting customer material on a dual anvil test stand. 8. If the cutting is OK, the die is once again checked under microscope for any damages due to testing. 1 pc test cut sample is sent to the customer and 1 pc is kept in RR Rotary file together with the work sheet. 9. After final testing, the die is shipped. Prior to shipment rust prevention is applied and the die is wrapped in foam material for protection. A copy of the RR Rotary work sheet and a test cut sample are packed with the die. The crate is strapped with a steel band and never with nails. 10. Paperwork is finished and transport is arranged. 11. Work sheets and test cut samples are filed for easy reference. Delivery time: 5-10 days in house (special emergency services available) Price: Approx. 10% of new die price (valid for ordinary repair only) After repair the die is back to optimal function. It is as good as new.
